Free Instagram Reach Rate Calculator

Reach divided by followers is one number hiding two completely different stories. Add the split and find out whether your own audience is seeing you at all. Nothing you type ever leaves your browser.

Your reach

Add your non-follower reach on the left and this splits into the two numbers that actually mean something.

About what gets reported for accounts your size.

These bands are what third party studies commonly report, not an Instagram figure. Instagram publishes no benchmark. Reach depends enormously on format, and your own last month is a better comparison than any of them.

How this is worked outReach rate = total reach / followersFollower reach rate = (total reach - non-follower reach) / followersFrom strangers = non-follower reach / total reachEverything comes from numbers you typed. Reach rate over 100 percent is not an error: it means the post reached more people than follow you.

What this tool does

Reach rate is reach divided by followers, and on its own it can tell you almost the opposite of the truth. A post that reached 40,000 people with 8,000 followers has a reach rate of 500 percent, which looks spectacular. It can also mean that only 2,000 of your own followers ever saw it and the rest of the reach came from strangers.

Those are two different situations and they need two different responses, and the single number cannot tell them apart. That is why this asks for your non-follower reach, which Instagram shows you and almost nobody looks at. With it, you get follower reach (are my own people seeing me?) and stranger reach (is this travelling?) separately.

Instagram has been a recommendation feed for years, so low follower reach and high total reach is often success rather than failure. It just is not the success the single number implies.

It is free, there is no signup, and the whole thing runs in your browser.

How to work out your reach rate properly

The numbers are all in post insights. The one that matters is the one nobody scrolls down to.

  1. 1Open a post's insightsTap View insights under one of your posts. Reach is at the top, and the follower and non-follower split is further down, which is why almost nobody uses it.
  2. 2Use several posts, not your best oneAverage your last nine or so. One viral reel tells you about that reel.
  3. 3Read the follower reach firstThis is the number the whole tool exists for. If your own followers are not seeing you, that is a content or a consistency problem, and no amount of total reach hides it.
  4. 4Then look at the stranger shareHigh stranger reach is Instagram pushing your post beyond your audience, which is the whole growth mechanism. A post with low follower reach and high stranger reach is not failing, it is doing something else.
  5. 5Compare formats, not accountsReels travel and carousels do not, so a reel and a carousel have completely different reach rates regardless of quality. Compare like with like or you are just measuring the format.

What low reach usually means

In rough order of how likely it is, and none of the likely ones are shadowbans.

  1. 1The formatThe first thing to check, and the least dramatic. Reels get shown to strangers, static posts largely do not. If your reach fell when you stopped posting reels, that is why.
  2. 2The first two secondsInstagram decides whether to keep showing a post based on what early viewers do. A weak opening means it stops travelling, and low reach is the symptom rather than the cause.
  3. 3ConsistencyPost rarely and your followers stop interacting, so Instagram shows your posts to fewer of them, so they interact less. It is a loop and it is nobody's fault but it compounds.
  4. 4Not a shadowbanIt is the first thing people reach for and almost never the answer. Instagram does not acknowledge the term. Restricted hashtags are real and checkable, and our banned hashtag checker covers those, but account-wide suppression is mostly a story people tell about a bad month.

What reach rate tells you, and what it does not

It is a division, and this one is unusually easy to read backwards without the split.

What this tells you

  • Whether your own followers see youThe whole point. Split out from the total, so a post that travelled cannot hide a post your audience never saw.
  • Whether it travelledStranger reach is the growth mechanism. High stranger reach and low follower reach is a real result, just not the one the single number implies.
  • Whether your numbers are impossibleNon-follower reach above total, or impressions below reach. Both are common paste errors and both are arithmetically impossible.
  • How often people saw itAdd impressions and you get frequency, which is the difference between reaching people and reaching the same people repeatedly.

What it cannot tell you

  • Why the reach is what it isThis is the big one. It counts. It has no idea whether the post was bad, the format was wrong, or you had not posted in three weeks.
  • Whether reach is worth anythingReach is not customers. A reel that reached 200,000 strangers and sold nothing is a worse post than a carousel that reached 400 followers and sold six things.
  • Format differencesReels and carousels are not comparable and both get compared to the same benchmarks anyway, including the ones on this page.
  • Any official benchmarkInstagram publishes none. The bands here are third party studies of other people's accounts, and reach varies more than almost any other metric.
  • Whether you were shadowbannedNobody can tell you that, including tools that claim to. Instagram does not acknowledge the concept, and there is nothing to measure.
  • What the strangers found when they arrivedA post that reached 40,000 people also showed 40,000 people whatever was in the comments underneath it.

Being seen vs what they see

Questions people actually ask

  • Reach divided by followers, times 100. The more useful version splits it: subtract your non-follower reach from your total reach to get how many of your own followers saw the post, then divide that by your follower count. Instagram gives you both numbers in post insights, and the second one is the question people actually mean.
