What this tool does
Emoji spam is the one kind of comment a word filter can never catch, because there are no words in it. A wall of money bags and rockets under your ad, a row of pointing fingers aimed at a bio link, a chain of fire. Your keyword list reads all of that as nothing at all and leaves it sitting there.
The part most people miss is that Meta's blocked words field takes emojis as entries, exactly like words. Instagram says so directly: you can add words, phrases, numbers, or emojis. So you can hand it a list of the emoji combinations scammers lean on, and those comments get hidden on sight.
The honest catch is that emojis are not spam by themselves. Blocking the fire emoji hides scam bait and also hides the customer who genuinely loved your product. That is why the risky categories here are off by default and every one tells you what it will cost you.
It is free, there is no signup and no email, and the whole thing runs in your browser.
How to block emojis on Instagram
Instagram's Hidden Words field takes emojis exactly like words. This is not a workaround, it is documented behaviour that almost nobody uses.
- 1Pick your categories and copy the listTick the kinds of emoji spam you get. Read the hints, since two of the categories will also hide real customers and are off by default for that reason.
- 2Open Hidden Words in InstagramGo to your profile, tap the menu, then Settings and activity, then find the Hidden Words section.
- 3Open Manage custom words and phrasesThis is your own list. Instagram accepts words, phrases, numbers, and emojis here, which is the bit that makes this work.
- 4Paste and savePaste the list in and confirm. Comments containing those emojis start getting hidden right away.
- 5Watch what it catches for a weekThis is the step people skip. Check what got hidden, and if a real customer got caught by the fire emoji, untick that category and regenerate. The list is meant to be tuned.
How to block emojis on a Facebook Page
Facebook calls it Content Moderation and it takes the same comma separated list.
- 1Copy your listSwitch the platform above to Facebook Page, then press Copy list.
- 2Open Content ModerationFrom your Page go to Settings, then Privacy, then Public Posts, and scroll to Content Moderation. It sits in your Page settings, not in Meta Business Suite's own settings.
- 3Paste the list and savePaste it in and save. The .csv upload works here too if you would rather keep the list in a file.
- 4Keep room in your budgetFacebook caps the list at around 1,000 keywords in total, shared with your word list. Emojis are cheap, but if you are already close to the cap, add the money and crypto categories first.
What an emoji list catches, and what it misses
This closes a real hole that word filters leave wide open. It is also the bluntest instrument on this whole site, and it is worth knowing that before you paste it.
What the list catches
- The spam with no words in itA wall of money bags and rockets is invisible to a keyword filter. There is nothing to match. Add the emoji itself and the whole comment goes.
- The bio pointersRows of pointing fingers aimed at a profile link are one of the most common spam shapes under ads, and they are almost always spam.
- Contact bait without the wordA phone emoji and a number does the same job as typing WhatsApp, and your word list never saw it.
- Bots that never learned to typeA lot of automated spam is emoji only precisely because it is cheap to post and hard to filter. This is the answer to that.
What it misses
- The difference between a scammer and a fanThis is the big one, and it is why two categories are off by default. ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ is a bot farming your post, and it is also your best customer. The emoji is identical. A list cannot tell, and it hides both.
- Any emoji you did not tickThere are thousands of them, and spammers rotate. Every new combination works until you spot it and add it yourself.
- Skin tones and variantsThe same emoji with a skin tone is a different entry. Covering all of them would multiply your list by six and eat Facebook's keyword limit.
- Emojis inside a real sentenceHi, do you ship to Spain ๐ is a customer. If ๐ is on your list, they are hidden, and you will never know they asked.
- Spam that is a pictureA screenshot or a profile photo doing the selling has no emoji to match, and no words either.
- Knowing what it hidMeta gives you almost no view of what your filter caught, so the customer it hid by mistake is invisible to you as well.
An emoji list vs Sweep Inbox
An emoji list is a symbol matching a symbol. Here is what changes when something reads the comment instead, which for this particular problem is the whole difference.
| Emoji block list | Sweep Inbox | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free, built into Meta | Paid, with a 7 day free trial |
| How it decides | Matches the emoji, wherever it appears | Our AI model reads the whole comment and works out what it is |
| ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ from a bot | Hidden, if you ticked the box | Hidden |
| ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ from a real customer | Also hidden. Same emoji, no way to tell | Left alone, because it is a happy customer |
| New emoji combinations | Get through until you add them yourself | Handled without you touching a list |
| Skin tone variants | Each one is a separate entry you have to add | Not a thing you have to think about |
| Upkeep | You maintain the list forever | Nothing to maintain |
Questions people actually ask
- Yes, and it is the most under used setting Meta ships. Instagram's Hidden Words custom list takes words, phrases, numbers, or emojis, so an emoji on your list gets any comment containing it hidden. It is under Settings and activity, then Hidden Words, then Manage custom words and phrases. Facebook does the same thing under Content Moderation.
