What this tool does
Start with the part every other page on this topic leaves out: Instagram does not publish a list of banned hashtags. There is no official source. There never has been. Every list you have ever read, including this one, is crowd-reported, which means somebody searched a tag, saw the posts were hidden, and wrote it down. Then Instagram unbanned it three weeks later and told nobody.
So a checker like this is a shortcut, not an authority, and any tool presenting its list as fact is overselling. What it is genuinely good for is the surprising ones. Nobody guesses that #desk is a problem, or #adulting, or #beautyblogger. Those got overrun by spam years ago and stayed restricted, and they sit in a lot of perfectly ordinary hashtag sets.
The real check takes ten seconds and it is always right: search the tag in the app. If you see Recent posts are hidden, or the tag page is empty, it is restricted today. This page teaches that check because it is the only one that cannot go stale, and it is what we would do ourselves.
It is free, there is no signup, and the whole thing runs in your browser.
How to check whether a hashtag is banned
The list above is the fast pass. This is the reliable one, and it is worth doing for any tag you use every week.
- 1Search the tag in the Instagram appType it into search and open the hashtag page. This is the whole check, and it is the only one that reflects what is true today rather than what somebody reported last quarter.
- 2Look at what the page saysIf you see Recent posts are hidden because some posts may not follow community guidelines, the tag is restricted. If the page is empty or the tag does not exist in search at all, that is the strongest signal there is.
- 3Check Top posts against RecentSome tags show Top posts and no Recent tab. That is the partial restriction people mean by shadowbanned: your post can still appear for some people and will never show in the recent feed.
- 4Check the tags you reuse mostDo not check thirty tags one by one every time. Check the ten you paste into every post, because those are the ones doing the damage repeatedly if one goes bad.
- 5Drop it and move onThere is no appeal and no fix. If a tag is restricted, stop using it. Using it repeatedly is the thing that some people believe escalates from one post being suppressed to your whole account being quiet.
Why ordinary words get banned
The surprising entries all got there the same way, and it is never about the word.
- 1Spam moves inA tag gets popular, bots find it, and it fills up with content that has nothing to do with the word. #desk and #adulting are not offensive. They were overrun.
- 2Instagram restricts the tag rather than the accountsIt is far cheaper to limit one hashtag than to chase thousands of spam accounts. The tag takes the punishment for what was posted under it.
- 3Which means normal businesses get caughtA coffee shop tagging #desk is doing nothing wrong and gets the same restricted reach as the bots. There is no notification, and nothing tells you.
- 4And the ban lifts without announcementSometimes the tag comes back. Nobody is told, which is exactly why every list on the internet, including this page's, drifts out of date the moment it is written.
What this checker knows, and what it cannot
It compares your tags to a list of reports. That is worth something and it is worth knowing exactly how much.
What this checker catches
- The ones nobody guesses#desk, #adulting, #beautyblogger. Ordinary words in ordinary hashtag sets, restricted for reasons that have nothing to do with you. This is most of the value.
- The obvious spam tags#like4like and the rest. Widely reported, reliably restricted, and still pasted into thousands of posts a day.
- Whether you are over the limitInstagram allows 30 per post and silently ignores the rest. Paste 40 and ten do nothing, with no warning.
- Why a tag is on the listSpam, adult, safety, or an everyday word that got overrun. The reason tells you whether it is likely to come back.
What it cannot know
- Whether a tag is banned todayThis is the big one and no tool can fix it. Instagram publishes nothing, bans and unbans without notice, and every list is a snapshot of what people reported. Search the tag in the app: that is the only answer that is true right now.
- Every tag not on the listNot on the list means not reported, not safe. The list is partial on purpose, because a longer one presented as complete gives false comfort about everything it is missing.
- Regional differencesRestrictions are not identical everywhere. A tag can be fine for you and hidden for someone in another country.
- Whether your reach problem is the tags at allMost posts that underperform underperform because of the post. Hashtags are the first thing people blame and rarely the actual reason.
- Anything about shadowbansInstagram does not acknowledge the term. Restricted tags are real and documented in the app. Account-wide shadowbans are largely folklore, and we are not going to sell you a fix for something nobody can measure.
- What is in your commentsA tag brings people to the post. What they read underneath it decides what they do next, and no hashtag checker looks there.
Hashtags vs what happens next
Hashtags are about getting seen. Everything after that is a different problem. Here is the split.
| This checker | Sweep Inbox | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free, no signup | Paid, with a 7 day free trial |
| What it helps with | Being seen | What people read when they arrive |
| How current it is | A crowd-reported list with a date on it | Reads the comment in front of it, right now |
| The spam problem | Tells you a tag was ruined by spam | Stops spam ruining your comment section |
| When it runs | When you open it | Around the clock |
Questions people actually ask
- Search it in the app. If the page says Recent posts are hidden because some posts may not follow community guidelines, or the tag shows almost nothing, it is restricted. That is the only reliable check, because Instagram publishes no list. A checker like this one is a shortcut for the commonly reported ones, not an authority.
