What this tool does

Nobody budgets for comment moderation. It is not a line item, it never gets approved, and no one signs off on it. How to work out what moderation is costing you

The calculator is only as honest as the numbers you feed it, and the instinct is to lowball every one of them. Try not to.

  1. 1Count the comments on a normal dayOpen one page and count what a real day looks like, not your quietest one. If you are running ads, count a day you were spending, because that is the day the comments show up.
  2. 2Be honest about the minutesIt is rarely as fast as you think. Reading it is quick, but deciding what it is, checking the account, hiding it, and getting back to what you were doing is not. Two minutes is a fair starting point for anything that needs a decision.
  3. 3Use the real hourly rateIf you pay someone, use what they cost you rather than what lands in their bank. If you do it yourself, use what an hour of your time is worth. If you would rather not put a number on that, leave it at zero and read the hours instead.
  4. 4Multiply by every page you runThis is where agencies get a surprise. Ten clients is ten comment sections, and the work does not get faster because you did the last one five minutes ago.
  5. 5Look at the yearly figureThe monthly number is easy to shrug off. The yearly one is the one that tends to change the conversation, because it is the same money you would spend on a person.

  • The work multiplying across pagesModeration does not get cheaper per page, it gets more expensive in total. Agencies feel this first, and the calculator shows the slope.
  • The cost nobody signs off onThis work never gets budgeted, so it never gets questioned. Putting a yearly figure on it is usually the first time anyone has.
  • Time as the real currencySet the rate to zero and the money disappears, but the hours do not. That is the honest version for a founder doing it themselves at 11pm.

What it leaves out

  • The sales the spam already cost youThis is the big one. You paid for the impression, and a scam reply sat at the top of your comments while you slept. That is money gone, and no number of hours saved will bring it back.
  • The comments you never sawThe calculator prices the comments you handled. The ones you missed cost you more and appear nowhere in this maths, because you do not know about them.
  • Getting your attention backTwenty comments do not cost twenty times one comment. Every interruption drags you out of whatever you were doing, and the way back in is not free.
  • The customer questions buried underneathPrice, sizing, shipping. Those comments turn into orders, and they are the ones missed while you are busy hiding scams. That is lost revenue, not a lost hour.
