What this tool does
The famous Facebook limit is 63,206 characters. It is a genuinely useless fact. Nobody has ever written a post that long, and the number people repeat it to has never once been the thing that cost them anything.
The number that costs you something is the See more link, and Facebook has two of them. On a phone your post is cut at roughly 125 characters. On a desktop it is more like 477. So the same post can be complete on your laptop while you write it and cut mid sentence for the majority of your audience, who are on their phones. You will never see it happen.
That is why this counter has a device switch, and it is the difference between this and the Instagram one. Write 200 characters and it fits perfectly on your screen and disappears behind a link on everybody else's.

How to write a Facebook post that does not get cut
The rule is not be short. It is put the point where a phone can see it.
- 1Write for 125 characters, not 63,206That is roughly three lines on a phone. Everything after it is for the small minority who tap See more, and you should assume nobody does.
- 2Check it on the phone settingThis is the step that catches people. You write on a laptop, where 400 characters look fine, and your audience reads on a phone, where they do not. Switch the device above.
- 3Do not open with a hook that pays off laterThe classic mistake. Something intriguing whose punchline is in paragraph two, and paragraph two is behind a link. Now it is just a confusing sentence.
- 4Put the link early if the link is the pointA URL below the cut is a URL nobody clicks. If the post exists to send people somewhere, send them before Facebook hides the rest.
- 5Ignore the 63,206It exists so nobody pastes a novel. It is not a target, it is not guidance, and it has never been the reason a post underperformed.

- Which words disappearNot just that you are over, but exactly what falls behind See more. Usually the reason to click.
- Emoji, counted properlyOne glyph, one character. Most counters use JavaScript's string length and tell you an emoji costs two.
- Which numbers to trustThe post limit is solid. The rest are reported rather than published, and the page marks which is which instead of implying they are equal.
What it cannot tell you
- The exact cut offFacebook publishes nothing and it moves with screen size, font size, and whatever shipped last week. About 125 and about 477 are useful approximations, not a spec.
- Whether the post is any goodThis is the big one. A post that fits perfectly and says nothing is worse than one that gets cut after a great first line.
- The numbers Facebook will not confirmComment, bio, and page description are all reported figures. We would rather tell you the sourcing is thin than perform certainty.
- Link previews and imagesThey change how much text shows before the cut. A count is not a preview.
- Combined emojiA flag or a family emoji is several code points glued together and can count as more than one, even here.
- What happens under the postYou will spend twenty minutes on 125 characters, and the top comment underneath was written by a stranger in four seconds.
