What this tool does
Engagement bait is asking for interactions to game distribution rather than because you want them. Meta announced in 2017 that it demotes it, named five kinds, and has been doing it ever since. The five are vote baiting, react baiting, share baiting, tag baiting, and comment baiting, and those are Meta's words rather than ours.
The cruel part is that it works, briefly. Tag a friend does get you comments. Then the post gets demoted for having asked, so the engagement you bought yourself costs you the reach you were buying it for. It is a tax you pay to a post that was going to do fine.
The distinction this tool is built around is the one a keyword filter cannot make: a genuine question is not bait. Sage green or rust? asks for a comment and is completely fine, because the answer is useful to you. COMMENT YES IF YOU AGREE asks for a comment as a toll. Same action, different reason, and Meta cares about the reason.

How to write a caption that earns engagement
The rule underneath all five categories is one thing: ask because you want the answer, not because you want the reach.
- 1Check the caption before you post itPaste the whole thing, hashtags included. Bait in the last line counts the same as bait in the first.
- 2Ask yourself what you would do with the answerThis is the actual test, and it is a better one than any checker. If someone replied, would you care what they said? Sage green or rust, you would. Comment YES if you agree, you would not, because the answer carries no information.
- 3Use the real features for the real thingIf you want a vote, use the poll. If you want a quiz, use the quiz sticker. Meta built those and does not demote them, and they are easier to answer than typing a letter into the comments.
- 4Never require a share to enterThis one is worth separating from the rest. Requiring a share is not just demoted, it breaks Meta's promotion guidelines, which puts more than your reach at risk.
- 5Answer what comes backThe best reason to ask a real question is that a comment section with the brand replying in it is worth more than the reach you were baiting for anyway.

These are not our categories. Meta listed them when it announced the demotion, and the wording below is theirs.

- 2React baitingLike if you agree, double tap if you relate. Asking for the reaction rather than earning it.
- 3Share baitingShare to win, share with three friends. The most demoted, and the one that also breaks the promotion rules.
- 4Tag baitingTag a friend who needs this. The most common by a distance, and the easiest to fall into because it feels friendly.
- 5Comment baitingComment YES, type AMEN, first 50 comments win. Asking for a comment as a toll rather than a conversation.

- Whether your post will actually do wellThis is the big one. Nobody outside Meta can predict a single post's reach, and this makes no attempt to. Clean captions flop and baity ones sometimes fly.
- Bait it has never seenIt knows the patterns written into it. New phrasings, other languages, and anything clever are invisible until someone adds them.
- Your imageTAG A FRIEND rendered in 200 point text on the picture is bait, and this reads the caption.
- ContextSome captions match a pattern and are completely fine in context. That is why every flag shows the exact text, so you can overrule it.
- Whether it is worth it anywayBait works, then costs you. That is a trade you might make deliberately for one launch. The tool has no opinion on your strategy.
- What happens in the comments afterBait works best on the posts that attract the most spam. A giveaway caption is a scam magnet, and this checker only reads the caption.
