What this tool does
There are two numbers for an Instagram caption and only one of them is worth knowing. The limit is 2,200 characters, which almost nobody reaches. The cut off is around 125, which everybody reaches, and that is where your caption disappears behind the word more.
Nothing warns you. Instagram accepts the whole thing, shows the first line and a half, and hides the rest behind a link most people never tap. So if your reason to buy is in the second paragraph, it is functionally not there.
This counts all four fields, shows exactly which words fall behind the more link, and counts emoji the way you do rather than the way JavaScript does. It also flags the characters Instagram will not accept in a username, which is the one field with rules about what you type rather than how much.

How to write a caption that does not get cut off
The rule is not be short. The rule is put the point where people can see it.
- 1Put the whole idea in the first lineWrite as if the caption is one sentence long, because for most of your audience it is. Everything after the cut off is for the small number of people who tapped more.
- 2Do not open with a hook that needs a payoffThis is the classic mistake. You wrote something intriguing that pays off in paragraph three, and paragraph three is behind a link. The tease is now just confusing.
- 3Put hashtags at the end or in a commentEither works and neither is a ranking trick. What matters is that thirty hashtags at the top eat your visible caption, which is the most valuable space you have.
- 4Watch the emojiThey count, and in a 150 character bio a row of them is expensive. This counter counts them the way you do rather than the way most counters do.
- 5Check the bio on a phoneBios wrap differently and line breaks behave oddly. 150 characters that look fine here can be four cramped lines on a real device.
Every Instagram limit worth knowing
Four fields, four different rules, and only one of them is about what you type rather than how much.

What it cannot tell you
- The exact cut off pointInstagram does not publish it and it moves with screen width and language. About 125 is the useful approximation, not a spec.
- Whether the caption is any goodThis is the big one. A caption that fits perfectly and says nothing is worse than one that gets cut off after a great first line.
- The comment limit, honestlySources say 1,000 and 2,200 and Instagram says nothing. We picked one and told you it is disputed rather than performing certainty.
- Combined emojiA flag or a family emoji is several code points glued together and can count as more than one, even here. Nothing counts these the way a human does.
- How it wraps on a phoneLine breaks, screen widths, and languages all change the shape. A count is not a preview.
